Dorothea Leonalla McCollier - Biography

Nickname(s):  DL, D
Nova Name:  Mechanisma
Age: 20
Birthdate:  December 21
Gender: Female
Appearance: Messy bright red hair, often falling in over her eyes.  Her eyes are a storm grey, but very few people actually see them, since she almost always has either her hair in her eyes, or is wearing a pair of goggles.  Her skin is fair in appearance, and freckles heavily when she stays out in the sun for extended periods of time.  She stands just short of 5'10", but is much too thin for her height.   While most women her age would be proportionally built, DL seems to have been starved during key points in her growth, resulting a lanky and almost frail appearance.
Born:  Vagabond Hills, Cap au Diable
Location:  New Haven, Cap au Diable- relocated to Founders Falls
Profession: Self employed mad scientist yearning for a successful and fulfilling job where she can just build her robots and be left alone.
Education: Dropped out of school at the age of 12, DL has since educated herself, surpassing levels of education far into PhD level by the age of 15.  Feels that degrees are nothing more than a piece of paper, and that education needs to be learned through actions, not through books.  While books provide starting points, they will not properly give the level of learning needed for comprehension.
Hobbies and Interests: Robots, dismantling machines to learn how they work, putting said machines back together again, Rube Golberg machines, Sci-Fi movies
Disposition and Personality: Very timid, DL does NOT like being around other people due to the abuse she suffered by not only her parents, but also by her peers.  She does not trust anything that she has not built, and will attempt to take the object apart to figure out how it works...and if she can make it work better.  If a person manages to get them to trust her, it is VERY rare, and she still won't open up to that person very much.
When working, she is very focused, and when she's just on her own, she never fully relaxes, always wanting to move and learn new things.
Weaknesses/Faults: Untrusting, fear of getting close to others, cynical.
Pet Peeves: People who show off their powers and expect others to be in awe.  People who look down on her because of her past.  Inadequate tools for a job.
Fears: Being made to return home to the abuse she was raised in.
Guilty Pleasures: Junk shops, new schematics, tool stores and hobby shops.
Prized Posessions: Her lab coat and goggles, won in a "Jr scientist" contest run by her hero on the Rogue Isles, Dr. Aeon.
Bad Habits: Forgetting to sleep/eat/drink, relying too heavily on her "minions" (robots).
Proudest Accomplishments: Building a fully functional robot by the age of 8.  Winning the Rogue Isles Jr. Scientist contest 5 years in a row.
Secret Talents: Able to change body into electricity, invulnerable to physical attacks, can convert her own inner energy into electricity (known to use when hotwiring vehicles), mild telekinesis.
Typical Clothing: Clothing from second hand stores, most often jeans and a polo shirt, with sturdy shoes.  ALWAYS seems to be wearing a white lab coat with a strange logo on the breast pocket, and a pair of goggles.
Physical Mannerisms: Can't sit still, always moving/drumming fingers on objects or leg when thinking/concentrating, when standing still she keeps her hands clasped behind her back.
Accent?: Has a slight Irish accent due to her family history and the part of the Rogue Isles she lived in.
Languages: Speaks English and Gaelic fluently, can read binary.
Most comfortable in _____ location: Her lab or in a junk shop.

Family: Father who is in the Rogue Isles jail, mother who is constantly on probation.  She distanced herself from them when she dropped out of school and ran away.
Biography: DL was born to the wrong parents, on the wrong side of town, on the Rogue Isles of all places. Her mother, wanting to give her child a name that stood out, named her Dorothea Leonella, a name that she HATES.  Growing up in a household where her father was in and out of jail for petty crimes, and when he was home he was drunk and abusive, DL learned from an early age that she couldn't trust anyone if she hoped to survive.

When she started school, her worn out clothes and second hand school supplies left her the subject of ridicule, and many of the kids took it upon themselves to show her how unwelcome she was in their school.  While she tried to keep to herself and simply focus on her schooling, it seemed that her parents and her classmates were hard set to keeping her from her desires.  DL took to hiding her belongings, sneaking out after her bedtime and studying at that time.  When she reached the age of 10, she entered the Jr Scientist contest, entering the robot she built when she was 8 and taking first place.  With a small shred of hope that it would make her family happy that she had won, she showed her trophy to her parents.

Instead of joy, her father took the trophy and destroyed it, then used the wood components to beat her until she was black and blue.  Her mother locked her in her bedroom, and would only open the door for the next month to let her out to go to the bathroom and to put food and water in the room at scheduled times.  Everything that they could find was removed from her room and sold, to "pay for her stupidity", and she was left with nothing but a thin mattress and a blanket in her room.  Having stashed most of her belongings under her floor boards and in a hole she kept hidden in her wall, DL was able to keep her notes and tools safe from her parents.

Once her groundation was up, DL returned to school, working hard to make up for her lost work.  Her peers upped their attacks on her for how "nerdy" she was, and made it a point during lunch to make sure her food wound up on the floor, or on her.  DL would come home to a pair of angry parents, who would proceed to beat her for ruining her clothes and wasting their "hard earned money" that they "graciously gave" to her for her lunches.  This continued for two more years, during which time she entered the Jr Scientist contest two more times, and again winning 1st place both years.  However, this time she kept her winnings secret, and began saving up her lunch money to purchase a small warehouse and began moving what little she owned there.  She spent her free time at the warehouse, building her robots and writing up more and more schematics and ideas (that she didn't have the money or supplies to build).

On her 12th birthday, DL spent the worst day she'd ever had.  Waking up to her parents fighting, DL tried to leave the house for school without gaining their attention, but failed miserably.  She arrived late for school, sporting several new bruises, a large cut on her cheek, a bloody lip, and a broken arm.  Her teachers sent her to the nurse, who cleaned her up and took her to the local clinic to put a cast on the broken arm.  When she returned to class, her peers saw another thing to tease her about, and every chance they got, would hit/smack her bruises and arm.

When lunchtime was reached, DL skipped her meal completely, hiding out in one of the classrooms and munching on a stale tasting candy bar, until her peers found her.  Her teachers found her hanging from the flag pole and sporting several new cuts and bruises, as well as her clothes covered in filth and torn up.  She refused to speak when they asked what had happened, instead asking if she could just go home.  Leaving the school, she snuck into her house, her father passed out on the couch and her mother "out".

Quickly, she gathered the last of her belongings and rolled up her old mattress and blanket, tying everything together and leaving the house for the last time.  After setting up her bed in her warehouse (which was really just a train storage container), she went to the clinic again to get her hand set (as her peers had shattered the cast and proceeded to break her hand as well).  Agreeing to work off the cost of the care she received, DL returned to her new home and ended her 12th birthday with a small cupcake for dinner.

Over the next three years, DL spent her time between working off her debt, and studying in the Cap au Diable libraries (and sometimes hacking into their computers to gain access to classes).  With what money she could earn, she kept entering the Jr Scientist contests, winning an even higher prestige on her 15th birthday than ever before.  Not only did she get to meet and be given her award by her hero, Dr. Aeon, she was awarded with a pair of goggles and a lab coat that were nearly identical to his, as well as a small patch on the breast pocket naming her a lifetime member of Aeon's Myrmidons (nice way of saying minions...).

During one of her experiments, DL had an Aha! moment, where she realized that she could use her body's own electric charge to jump start her machines and robots.  Hooking herself up to a power converter of her own design, she flipped the switch....and erupted.  She awoke two weeks later to a splitting headache and a strange bump forming in the middle of her forehead.  After much trial and error, DL learned that she could not only transform into pure electricity, but she could also "create" electricity at will, and even manipulate the magnetic/electric fields around objects to move them for short distances.  She'd become a Nova, one on par with the likes of Synapse...though with much less training.

That same year, DL received a mysterious message from a "Potential Employer", who offered to pay her a quite well if she was willing to work for them.  Being the naive teen that she was, she agreed, and came to work for a scientific company over in Paragon City.  After several jobs, it was agreed that she would be of better use if she could be over in Paragon, rather than working out of a small container in the Rogue Isles.  A plan was devised for her to break into a rival company, Lee's Press-On Limbs, and steal their data.

DL made short work of the job, leaving behind files of Justin Beiber videos, One Direction songs, and pictures of Black Veil Brides instead of the cybernetic datafiles.  She even set the computers to Rick Roll the users when booted up.  She made a copy of the data and placed it in the agreed upon location, then went back to her "home" to wait for the police to arrive...just like planned.

Because she was so low income, she was given a public defender, while Lee's hired Chris Jenkins, the leading attourney in Paragon City.  To set an example, it was suggested that DL be sent to the Zig (again, just as planned), and the judge (who was up for re-election) agreed.  DL became one of the youngest people to enter the Zig, and one of the calmest.  Inside, her probation officer began working with her on controlling her powers, showing her how to hide her Nova status from others on command.  Never mind that her probation officer was in fact an employee of the company she worked for, and this was her "probationary" period of hire.

DL completed her sentence in five years, getting out early for good behaviour and was "conveniently" released into the care of her employer (not that anyone else knew), who agreed to make sure she became a model citizen of Paragon, and would ensure she stayed on the straight and narrow.  She was to finish out her sentence on probation, with time able to be removed for working towards the betterment of Paragon.  Placed in one of the many apartment complexes in Founders Falls, DL had her belongings shipped over from the Rogue Isles, and began working towards her latest plan...the creation of a free thinking robot.
